Not only was Herbert Behrens-Hangeler an outstanding painter, he also wrote poetry, played and composed music, wrote film scripts and directed. Our presentation is showing a cross-section of his entire artistic creation in the field of pictorial art. Works from the 1920s to the 1960, meanwhile rare, were chosen from the artist’s unpublished works, and are, in some cases, presented for the first time.

Life and work of  Herbert Behrens-Hangeler is symptomatic of an entire generation of artists. Born in Berlin in 1898 and, thus, exposed to the social tragedies and upheavals of the 20^th century, he, at no time and under no political circumstances, let himself be put off his creative work. 

Works by Herbert Behrens-Hangeler are to be found in numerous collections as well as in Leipzig’s Museum der bildenden Künste, Dresden’s Galerie Neuer Meister, and the Kupferstichkabinett of Berlin’s Staatliche Museen.
