From Brass to Ziegler - Artists of the Forgotten Generation

Our new exhibition "From Brass to Ziegler" broadens the view to an entire generation who has been at the center of our gallery work since the opening of the "Möwe": artists whose work was wrongly forgotten for a long time. The paintings, watercolours, drawings and sculptures from the first half of the 20th century not only impress with their individual mastery, their diversity also demonstrates the creative contribution with which these artists enriched the various modern art movements in Germany.
Many of them belonged to groups that had been looking for a new form of artistic expression since 1900; they were i.a. members of the November Group, founded in 1919, studied at the avant-garde Bauhaus or exhibited in Herwarth Walden's legendary Sturm gallery. Their art was defamed as "degenerate" by the National Socialists and removed from museums and galleries. Some artists left Germany, others went into internal emigration, the war destroyed studios and livelihoods. In the 1980s the rediscovery of the forgotten generation began. The power, freshness and originality of their art is the focus of our exhibition.

The exhibition will be extended until April 10th 2021.
